Owning a Daring

FAQs

Can I try it out before committing?
Yes, absolutely! We can some to all sorts of arrangements, from coming to join an existing boat for a weekend; borrowing a boat for a weekend or a regatta; all the way to a season-long trial run. We can even arrange for you to be supported by an experienced sailor if that would help.

We are keen to enable you to "try before you buy", simply because we know that you'll love it.
How can I get a Daring?
Check out the Classifieds section on the website, or drop us an email / contact form and we'll be back in touch.
How much does a Daring cost to run?
The class aims to manage costs by preventing syndicates from "spending to win". Most syndicates end up spending £10,000 to £12,000 per year, which includes everything apart from the after-race drinks. Some boats come in with lower fees.

While this can appear expensive, this is often shared with up to 5 or even 6 co-owners, making it quite good value among sailing boats. Given a typical season of 60-70 races, this can mean per-race per-person costs of as low as £50!

This includes everything - winter storage, commissioning, launching, scrubbing, all race entries, one new sail (on rotation), insurance, mooring, decommissioning at the end of the season, and a small budget left over for unforeseen repairs and general maintenance.
Don't I need to be a member of XYZ Yacht Club?
The Darings are independent of any given Yacht Club in Cowes and are have members from all of them. You can be a member of all, some or none and still race with us.
Can I buy a Daring and make it faster?
Your boat is your own, of course, but it must conform to the Rules to race as a Daring. These generally prohibit any changes to spars, sails, hull or sheeting positions but do offer flexibility on fixtures and fittings.

Some people have carried out extensive restoration works and had their boats re-admitted to the fleet - for a great example, see John Corby's work on his website.

If you want to discuss anything before you get involved, then we welcome your ideas and are open to evolving the class with care.
