Fantastic Photos

The Daring Class thanks Jane Peckham for bringing some amazing photos to our attention. The photos taken by Hamo Thorneycroft are probably the best ever taken of Darings racing and there are close up pictures of almost every crew.

A Daring Rescue

Racing during Cowes Week, a helmsman was knocked unconscious with a sickening thud of the boom.  Expert sailor and Author Steve Sleight tells the story in last month’s RNLI magazine.

Day out with the Darings – David Glenn

David Glenn, Editor of Yachting World joined the crew of Dolphin for the Saturday at Cowes Week. His article in Yachting World makes good reading:

“Being a thoroughly decent lot, the Daring fleet avoided shouting about their 50th birthday this year in order not to detract from the celebrations surrounding the XOD’s centenary. ‘Afterall, none of us will be around when this class reaches its 100th,’ noted David Gower aboard whose Daring Dolphin I had the considerable pleasure of sailing on the first day of Cowes Week” …

Relaunch News – 5.5m Modern Boats

Jamie Clark has brought news of a modern 5.5 class of boat that look very much like the Darings. For interest, some news from the 5.5 Class Association.

Here is a tribute to the many sailors who put a lot of effort into having former racers rebuilt and brought back to the race track. Two have recently relaunched their beauties, giving them a platform to exhibit their work done:

5.5 ITA 59 “Arunga III”. This 1970’s multiple champion boat (former KA-31, Z-128) had been going through difficult times in recent years, until Riccardo engaged in getting the boat back to shape & shine, most of the work being excellently done by himself. She is now again ready to race and on offer.

Owner: Riccardo Garriboldi – http://5.5inventory.org/ITA/059

traumfanger5.5 GER 74 “Traumfänger”. This sisterboat to the 1986 World Champion Warren Muir design “John B VII”, had been sailing in Norway (NOR 44) and then in The Netherlands, where already significant work had been done. After arrival in Germany Jochen Franzen encountered a problem zone in the hull, which needed considerable exchange of wood. Once in the mood, he added a new teak deck and varnishing of the hull as well as quite a bit of deck equipment. Finally he presented the boat during the German Open, not far away from the front ranks.
