Colonial Cup Challenge 2013 Review

After three days of intensive, demanding team racing and an equally demanding social programme, the Royal Perth Yacht Club were the worthy winners of the Colonial Cup.
Staged every three years alternating between the Solent and Perth this year’s event was blessed with perfect team racing conditions with winds ranging from five to fifteen knots, sunshine and courses in a reasonably benign area of the Solent. With races averaging twenty minutes a full programme of twenty two was run before a winner emerged on the final day.

Sailed in the Royal Thames/Royal Yacht Squadron J80’s, these well prepared, quick and responsive boats are the ideal choice for this form of event and irrespective of who won a particular race boats were rarely more than seconds apart at the finish.

With impeccable race management by the Royal London Yacht Club, with barely sufficient time between races for some of us senior members to dress wounds, and a superb social programme supported by the Royal Perth, the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Corinthian the event proved to be a resounding success and we look forward to challenging for the trophy again in Perth in 2016.

Colonial Cup Challenge 2013

Colonial Cup Monday 22 to Thursday 25 July

This regular event is steeped in tradition and is conducted by the Daring Class Association, this year we have chosen the Royal London Yacht Club to host The Colonial Cup. In 2012 it was hosted by The Royal Perth Yacht Club on the Swan River in Perth, Australia.

The Colonial Cup is a team racing event and this year we will be using the Royal Yacht Squadron’s fleet of J 80’s, the Cup will be contested over the three days with up to 8 races per day.

The Royal Perth Yacht Club is the current holder of the Colonial Cup, and as they are sending a team from Perth to compete we are sure their title is going to be hotly defended.

The format for this year’s regatta is three boat teams of four crew on each boat (including helm), which means we need at least 12. You don’t necessarily need Teams Racing (or Match Racing) experience, just your current racing/sailing experience and a willingness to get involved. If you are interested in taking part please contact Doug Harckham.

The schedule of events at the Colonial Cup is as follows:

• Monday 22nd July – Registration, Opening Ceremony and Welcome Supper at Royal London Yacht Club, Cowes.

• Tuesday 23rd July dinner/BBQ RYC

• Wednesday 24th July dinner/BBQ RCYC

• Thursday 25th July dinner RLYC

Sew Ann Sew – New Clothing Range 2012

Sew Ann Sew have been working with the Daring Committee to provide a new range of clothing items which can be embroidered to members requirements, thus producing bespoke garments.

The selection from the Front Row and Russell collections includes in the quoted price a breast pocket size embroidered logo of the 3 red Daring chevrons. There is also the option of adding a boat name & number, and for the first time a very eye catching large outline embroidery of a Daring is also available to add to the back of garments. Embroidery can also be added to collars, nape of neck or down sleeves to create a very individual personal look.

The range covers shirts in the style of polo, sweat, rugby and drill. The range also covers a soft shell gilet in both men’s and ladies version, and men’s combat shorts for a smart onshore look.

Sew Ann Sew is a family business, based on the Isle of Wight and have been providing a specialized service to business and private clients for the past 16 years. The first showing of the collection will be at Daring dinner at the RCYC on Saturday 14th July, 2012.

Please take time to browse Sew Ann Sew’s website and do not hesitate to contact Ann Hinton on 01983 753587 if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your requirements.
